Celo Skopje 06:38
*** How I want to sing for you all night until the dawn. And with song get the marketplace hopping, so Skopje can celebrate. Ay, may it make your heart start to dance, ay, it takes hold of your soul. Ay, may the passion of the song intoxicate you. And let the whole Skopje marketplace echo, with passionate song let the soul be healed. And let the whole Skopje marketplace see how you can’t escape from that passion! How I want red wine to make you tipsy tonight, to seize your heart and make it beat tonight only for me. Translated from the Macedonian by Rachel MacFarlane

Jas si zaljubiv drugo libe, Zaljubi si i ti.” *** Cursed be the one, and may that person never know happiness, who first made love and caused two hearts to suffer. I would often run into him, and my heart would begin to pound, but I could never find a way to strike up a conversation. In Strumica on the street I stood before him. He turned his back to me and quietly said to me, “I don’t love you. I’ve fallen in love with another— you should find someone else.” With eyes full of tears, with an overburdened heart, I have gone far away. Cursed be the one... Zv’jezda tjera mjeseca, Za goru ga otjera. //Za goricom vodica, Na vodici curica, B’jelo lice umiva.// “Daj mi malo vodice Iz te b’jele ručice!” //“Ne dam, dragi, ni kapi, Nek’ ti duša iskapi Zbog sinošnje besjede,// Zbog sinošnje besjede I rumene jabuke. //Drugoj daješ rumene, Meni mladoj uvele— Uvela ti duša ta!”// *** A star was chasing the moon all the way beyond the hill. Beyond the hill was a little spring, and at the spring was a young girl washing her fair face. “Give me a little water from that fair little hand of yours!” “No, my dear, not a drop. I wish you’d just die (lit. may your soul drain out of you) because of last night’s party and a rosy apple. You gave another girl some rosy apples, and gave me withered ones. I hope your soul withers, too!” Translation by Rachel MacFarlane

U modre usne zarijem zube Da pravu bol zaboravim. *** When I think of you, I’m afraid I’ll fall in love with you again. I sink my teeth into my bruised lips to forget the real pain. My sweetheart, these days I no longer grieve for you—I only ask of people that I cannot hear if you’re alone. My sweetheart, go out tonight—it’s not important who with. Find someone who looks like me so that I can at least not love you, so that I may love you no more. *** When I met my companion, my only friend, it was the happiest day—for I was no longer alone. Songs consoled us, sorrow smiled at us. But a whirlwind of bad fate carried him away from me. Oh, Ramo, Ramo, my friend, do you hear my sobs? I live in darkness now, like an extinguished ray of sun, because you’ve gone away and found a better life somewhere else. But I still hope, and I call to you: come back to me! Come back to me, Ramo—we share the same fate. Translation from the Serbian by Rachel MacFarlane
